online newsletters or ezines
The ezine (electronic newsletter) as an online marketing tool is well chronicled. This page talks about the "integration" part of it to your website. Whether or not your ezine subscription is managed by a backend script, you should have a subscription box on your homepage. It's a commitment to your visitors that you have information that could interest them further as your business grows.
It's a value add-on to provide your site visitors an opportunity to receive news and updates from you on matters that are of interest to them. To some extent, that counts as a conversion (successful site visit) since this is a voluntary opt-in to your mailing list essentially some measure of acceptance if not an endorsement that your products or services are worth considering.
Your newsletter can be plain text or HTML rendered. With plain text, you can simply create one using your regular email client (Outlook, Eudora, etc.) writing in sections with headers for each. Keep the same format for future editions so it is easily recognizable - remember to provide links back to pages on your site and an opt-out (unsubscribe) link and you are done.
With HTML versions, you will need to create a template (like a webpage) with header and footer and clearly laid out sections where your content should go - everything else on the page stays put - use image holders to keep the layout consistent. Here's where some integration is necessary - the template should be consistent with the theme of your site and to some extent it's functionality. Don't discount the effectiveness of this tried and tested e-marketing tool - small but very pervasive - in fact, if your mailing list grows, you could sell advertising space!
