Move over, SEO. Now there's SMO or Social Media Optimization. It wasn't long ago before Search Engine Optimization was all the rave - well, actually a Google generated necessity - which in a practical sense was good for content. It helped filter sites on the basis of relevance to your keyword searches and in an ideal world, should return the most relevant sites.

So where does SMO fit in? SEO has to do with helping your site rank better in search engine results which may be critical in a niche market but maybe less in a keyword search that returns a million pages. Site "relevance" is perhaps the most significant contributing factor. "Relevance" is roughly measured by the number of external links (especially links from high ranking sites) that point to your site.

The recent social media revolution is actually a re-emergence of community sites (like Digg, Technorati, De.licio.us, Facebook, etc.) with the advent of the so-called WEB 2.0 phenomenon. It suddenly came to mind that social bookmarking by community members created "external links" as a by-product boosting the "relevance" factor of the site bookmarked since there can be little reason to do so unless the content was in some way useful. So the more times your site or webpage is bookmarked by users unrelated to your site, the more it pushed the general consensus of "relevance" by peers.

The obvious tack is to make your site appealing enough to such communities so members will bookmark it for reference and share it with friends. To do that you will need to "optimize" your site as bait for bookmarkers - hence, Social Media Optimization - a win-win scenario!
